By Michelle Glicksman | July 22, 2024
SugarJam The Southern Kitchen was recently one of just two Black-owned restaurants chosen to be featured in Ebony magazine’s Ebony 45 Eats. The prestigious list, curated by the Ebony staff and editors, features Black chefs from across the United States.
“Our list highlights several establishments ranging from mom-and-pop shops to James Beard award-winning chefs and restaurants with cuisine selections that go from 100% plant-based to stick-to-your-ribs barbecue,” the staff writes as part of the intro to the list.
SugarJam The Southern Kitchen was founded by Dana Dumas and is a popular destination for Southern brunch food in Scottsdale. Dumas initially launched the brand in 2011 with a small at-home bakery. She sold items at craft fairs and festivals, and later opened SugarJam Bakeshop & Bistro. In 2021, she opened SugarJam The Southern Kitchen.
The weekend brunch menu includes options such as the Fried Lobster With Creole Shrimp, Crab N’ Grits, Catfish N’ Southern Grits Meal; Lobster Mac N Cheese With Fried Shrimp, Salmon Croquettes and Southern Grits Meal, Baked Jerk Chicken & Sweet Potato Waffle, Flapjacks N’ Fried Chicken Tenders; Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Croissant, Pulled Pork Hash, and more.
The lunch menu includes many of the same items, as well as options such as the Fried or Blackened Catfish Chicken Tender BLT and the award-winning Pork N’ Jack Burger.
SugarJam The Southern Kitchen is open Wednesdays through Sundays only.
